Saturday Morning I awoke to a sweet surprise on my couch... my littlest baby sister had driven up after she got off work, and crashed on our couch... so, we decided the original plan of
yard work for the day was in no way acceptable... is it ever acceptable?! and we headed off to capture the magic of a gorgeous Autumn day for our very own.
Hiking
Silver Falls is a natural Autumn activity choice hereabouts... it's a 30 mile drive up the
Entiat Valley, and it is SO. Very. Lovely. It's a perfect hike for kids as well. One of the neat things about this hike (as mentioned in the link above as well) is the drive in and the view around the hike really indicate how "on the edge" of the Cascade Range you are. There's a mix of the rainy mountain trees on the West side of the waterfall, which slowly changes to the dryer, more "desert" forest trees on the East side of the trail.

The water tumbles down the hill, a few still pools interspersed with white water short tumble sections, and huge misty falls as well. It's dark and cool and shaded in some places, and brilliantly ethereal
rainbowed and water diamond sparkly in others...

The hike is saved from being terribly steep by the switchback trail on either side of the falls.

And just when it starts to get boring you're back at the falls, and ooh-
ing and
ahh-
ing over the rainbows in the mist.

The whole way up, you have this view off the steep side of the trail.

And at the top you can hop back and forth over the creek as much as you like, since there are old logs and stones and branches standing firm, and lecturing the cheerful creek as it tumbles past.
...I've seen you come through here before, they say, and many waters before you. The path is hard, and different troubles will beset you as you head for that mighty Pacific Ocean. But, I will see you here again soon, or my tree/rock brothers will see you elsewhere in these great mountains of ours. Carry on, and we shall await your return... The water cheerfully carries on, having no idea of the plummet that is in it's near future. Fortunately it's water, and in it's powerful fall is only beauty and grace.
While we admired the gurgling creek and talked about weather patterns, Frank and Auntie
Caca had fun with the bridge and the camera. :-)

The best pictures of the day were at a trail spot that we almost didn't bother to go to, as it wasn't in the main path. I'm so very glad we did.

From behind the waterfall.

Auntie
Caca and my babies... excuse me, kids. I've recently been informed that even though they will always
be my babies, even until they're 110 years old, it would be best if I didn't feel compelled to embarrass them by publicly
calling them my babies, as they are now "kids" not babies. Yeah, forget it babies. You're my babies and even when your babies babies have babies, I will still call you my babies.

I'm so glad that Auntie
Caca came to see me...
I'm pretty sure she actually came to see the babies but I'll still take it. :-)

Have a great week!
Such a beautiful adventure!! I have a tinsy tiny fear of heights... that trail looks a tinsy tiny bit too scary for me!! and that picture of y'all on the top of that fall.. YIKES! I love your sense of adventure and no fear!! but I will enjoy it from over here!! =) That my friend is why I like the Beach!! FLAT!! ha ha! ;)
ReplyDeleteWe need to get out on a fall hike too. All these boxes keep getting in our way, though : )
ReplyDeleteohhhh, sweet. good times had by all, it looks like! i will need to look this place up on the map now. but looking things up on the map usually involves an hour of looking at the map....so i better wait until tomorrow when i have time to look at the map. :)
ReplyDeleteTotally with you on calling them babies. You live in the most gorgeous place on earth. I'm jealous.
ReplyDeleteAren't sisters great? Glad I have one, and glad my girls do, too. And you know I will ALWAYS call mine babies. I don't care if they are embarrassed. When they have kids, they'll understand and probably think it's sweet their old mom still refers to them as such.
ReplyDeleteI'm still not 100% sure the places in your photos exist--they're too gorgeous. I'm glad you get to experience them, and I'm also glad you post high res pics so I can see the details. Keep doing that! We don't have a lot of hills around here, but I'm going to see if I can find some kind of elevation we can hike up to. The kids, I mean, babies, would LOVE that!
Oh, that waterfall is awesome! So pretty! I feel like I can feel and smell the cool fresh air. We have the AC on because it is so hot here. Seriously? COME ON FALL! Soon I will be in Colorado and it will have totally passed me by! Funny, it REALLY annoys me when people see Gooner and say, "Hi, baby." I don't know why. I want to say SHE'S NOT A BABY ANYMORE, BUT A LITTLE GIRL. I'm pretty sure they are just being nice...so I try to cool it!
ReplyDeleteThose pictures are breath taking. I am terrified of heights and looking down some of those slopes made me panic just a little.
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys were able to get out and enjoy the lovely weekend. One of these days I am going to visit Washington and when I do, you will have to point me in the right direction for all these amazing things.
You have some beautiful Photos in this post (as usual). Makes me miss living closer to the Gorge when we would just go hiking if it was a beautiful day. I think I need to take a hike. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my word, gorgeous! Your pics looked like shots from Lord of the Rings.
ReplyDeletehaha! Your kids are so cute-yup, I'm sure they don't want you to be calling them babies, and in another few years when they are featured on here, they will think whatever you are saying is so embarrassing. I can not believe your photos-seriously-so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had a sweet surprise like my baby sister asleep on my couch in the morning. Almost makes my heart ache-there is nothing quite like a sister, eh?
