So, last week we headed off to Cashmere to do what my girls call Junk Shopping. See, for my birthday I had recieved some money... and each year I look very forward to spending my birthday money, because I buy things we NEED all the time. But, with my birthday money I look so forward to spending it... because I solemnly pledge to only buy things that are in no way NEEDS but only delightful little things which give me extreme glee, and are in fact, unneccesary, and therefore greatly joyous. So, last year I spent my birthday money on three rediculously darling pairs of heels... I bargain shopped for them on Amazon.com, and anxiously awaited their arrival. Because bargain shopping also delights my heart. And all year long I wore them and loved them. And, I am not ashamed to admit that when no one was looking I may or may not have held a foot out in front of me, and grinned while I admired my shoes. I do love me some shoes.
Anyway, so basically since last year I had planned on buying myself one of these with my birthday money this year.

And, I won't lie, going online and shopping for shoes nearly won out over this a couple times... but, I knew it would bother me if I DIDN'T get one of these, so I held firm, and finally on Thursday I could handle it no longer, and I headed up to Cashmere to see if any Antique Stores had what I was looking for.

(Please excuse my grease spotted stove. It's getting cleaned this afternoon, I swear. No really, it is!!) So, since I brought it home I've been caressing it, smiling at it, and seasoning the inside of it, with great love and bacon fat. I adore cast iron... especially Griswold Cast Iron, which sadly is no longer made. According to the tag it was made around 1900--I need to research the numbers on it and see if I can find a little bit more about it. It is amazingly light and smooth. Creating cast iron of this quality is no longer done, and so I now own a piece of American history whose art of creation has been lost. I shall treasure you my darling! (Yes, I do speak to my cast iron quite often.)

And, I should duly note that my children LOVE to go on Junk Junkets with me. Bless their hearts, they are troopers. It's slightly nerve wracking, because Debris has this nickname for a very specific reason, but they're never going to learn if I don't take them with me, right?
So, we found this lovely little shop called Junkyard Gypsy's, on Mission St. in Cashmere. And, as we're currently working on redecorating our living room, I was also on the lookout for fun conversation pieces... and I totally lost my heart to this piece.

They also had a fun pair of brown boots I could not resist... I'm incapable of resisting well priced shoes.

And, I've wanted some apple box end signs ever since we moved here... but I've been very picky about them. First off, there are THOUSANDS of these things, apparently people collect them, or something. And, some of them are exorbitantly expensive. You'll never catch me paying $40 for a printed piece of paper, that's all I'm saying--well, maybe I would-I can't say never, I guess. :-) So, my apple box sign requirements were: LOCAL (as in Wenatchee, North Central Washington area apple packing companies only), CHEAP ($10 tops), and BLUE&RED, (because my laundry room is gray, and I thought blue and red would go nicely with that. Finally I found two in one day that fit these qualifications--and were actually only $5 and $6 respectively. YAY! I was a happy camper.

So, I'm going to paint and distress some wood red apple box style, and mount these on them, and they shall grace my Laundry Room.
And finally we found a hat for Kiki... who could resist? It is incredibly well made. I have no idea of the year it was made... the inside of it simply reads--Glenover, Henry Pollack, Inc. New York. It was only $5, and quite simply, when Kiki put it on her head, I melted. I'm glad it didn't cost too much money, because I was buying it. :-)

I'm hoping to keep my eyes peeled for more hats like this... I love them, and would like to find some for my own head.
Thank you for joining us for our Junk Junket!
LOVE the hat, and I know what you mean--when a hat says "I belong to THIS head!" you have to buy it. Hats don't often speak with that much authority. Great buys and can't wait to see the apple seals on your wall!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, your dutch oven is a beaut! How fun to own a little piece of history, and actually be able to use it!
ReplyDeleteGreat "junk" finds! I love shopping like this, it's my favorite! Kiki's hat is just too cute, it looks so good on her!
Wow, thanks for that vicarious shopping trip! Really, it's the only way I like to shop, haha... anyway, great Griswold, gorgeous Globe, and very...um, high galoshes :-) The chapeau is stunning!
