Your input needed here, please!

For the most part I'm pretty swift to make decisions... and that's actually a bit of an understatement. But, for some reason I'm having a hard time firmly deciding on the paint color I want in our master bedroom, and I thought I'd throw what I've got done already out there, and see if people will pass on their ideas for paint, or any other ideas to help me.
My preferred style of decorating is to use things that coordinate, BUT NOT MATCH. I feel twitchy-twitchy when things get all matchy-matchy. I love rooms that are deliberately styled over time, as people find different things that suit them, their experiences and their rooms. I do not typically care for rooms that are purchased off a showroom floor, with matching furniture, and little mass-produced so-called "art" pieces that coordinate. So, with this room I'm hoping to incorporate blacks, browns and creams as the neutral tones, and then have huge pops of oranges, reds and a little bit of greens as well. The more colors (within reason) you bring into a room, the easier it is to decorate. I think people tend to use too few color to decorate, and they end up trapping themselves into a vicious circle of not being able to buy things they love, because they "aren't the right color" or "won't go".

My original and most loved and still most probable plan is a to do a soft, but "gently glowing" orange (not Halloween looking!!!) on two walls, behind the bed and behind the chocolate colored taffeta curtains. And then, on the other two walls do more of a creamy candlelight color... but, my usual decisive self is having a hard time committing to this, partially because I think a mossy green might be a lovely restful color. The problem with green is that Kiki and Debris room is a deep, but bright green on the other side of the house, and I can't help but feel like maybe my house would start to feel like a green teeter-totter?! And, there's always tan, which would probably be the best bet for resale, but I can't help but feel like that would bore me...

I think the orange would look good behind my deep red lampshades and chocolate curtains, and I'm planning on getting deep red sheets also, to bring in coordination in my strange but delightful orange and red plan.

My ultimate desire for this room is that it be luxurious (which deep oranges and reds fulfill), and restful(bring in the greens), with many different textures--cozy flannel, luxurious furry feeling things, smooth silks, taffeta and satins, rougher heavyweight fabric only because it makes the cozy and the furry and the silks that much smoother...
So, what do you think? What would you do? Leave me a comment, and give me an opinion, I'm completely open at this point to any suggestions. I can't wait to hear what you think!

  1. i think orange would go really well, but then again orange/yellow walls tend to make people argue a lot, and you probably don't want that for your room! :)

  2. I think a deep color of some sort would look great on one wall, and on the other three, a coordinating color that is a lighter version of the same color. (But that doesn't really work well for orange, as oranges can start to look peachy when they are lighter.) I just think that something really dark would look good, and help anchor the room. Something too light would be washed out by the blanket. Something too bright would be too much beside the blanket. I LOVE that blanket though! I think you should bring in a zebra print covered chair, ottoman, bench or seteƩ and it would look so awesome!

And one last thing, make sure the color of the walls doesn't make your woodwork for the bedroom set look too purple or whatever. Sometimes paint right up beside cherry colored wood can really change the look of the furniture.

  3. Love your quilt. I am in favor of the mossy green and a warm ivory for the walls and a bunch of satin and silk covered cushions in the color of the drapes and quilt piled up on the bed--and definitely splurge on a great set of sheets to match the mossy wall--and another set to match the drapes so that you can change quickly for sudden company--but I do know that my taste is calmer than yours and it is YOUR room--and Garrett's--so listen most to him.... he feels best when he gets his rest :)

  5. My first thought was that lighter orange in the orange blocks on your quilt. Which, actually may be yellow, but in the picture it looks a variation of orange. Kinda dreamcicle-ish. I'm a sucker for green, and loooove mossy green bedrooms. So restful, indeed. However, I just painted my bedroom YELLOW, and I love it. So far no arguments have ensued as a result. :P
Oh, and I love the idea of painting one accent wall a bold color, and the rest of the walls something more toned down. Q's room has one "Texas" orange wall, and the rest are the original eggshell color, it works nicely.

  6. I'd personally go for the green wall. Pops of orange around the room would really stand out against the green. And don't worry about resale, you can always paint it again if you put it on the market someday (doesn't that sound like fun?).

  8. If you've ever seen my house, you know I love green, but all the talk of "yellow" and "orange" is making me think "apricot". Very toned-down apricot, though.

It's funny you're asking decorating advice, because I'm considering asking for some blog mama help, soon, too. It's more construction-related, but still decor...have fun!

  9. The only advice I can give you is from my previous experience. I am the person that goes and chooses a paint color from the color cards, gets a can of paint, takes it home and hates the color on my wall!! So my solution for all of my rooms is the Home Depot color scanner!! I love the thing! I find an object that I either have in the room or am around everyday and love the color of it, i.e. clothes, baby gate (did that before:), lamp shade, etc. I take it in, scan it, and tone it down by 20% or whatever you like. This process works for me because I know I already love the color of that object and I'm around it everyday. So, when I paint my whole wall that color I know I will already like it. Ok, that's my thoughts for ya. I hope it helps!! Happy paint hunting :)!

  10. I like the mossy green idea, it sounds very restful when mixed with the creams and other colors.

  11. Just for a quick opinion, for whatever it's worth...a nice green would look awesome in there. But a deep tone of yellow might look good too...

Love your quilt! Beautiful curtains too. I'm sure you sewed it all yourself since you're that kind of gal. Good job!

After painting my bathroom red, I have to say...go for your instincts. What do YOU like, and what do YOU think would look good and go with the style/mood you're trying to achieve?

  12. Your a woman after my own heart. I'm ALL ABOUT COLOR. Love the idea of something persimmon-y or tangerine. I just painted the master bathroom this week and chose "Sea Air" by Valspar. Think the color of water in Hawaii. Now I'm painting the cabinets in a dark espresso and accenting with lots of white and touches of red in a floral arrangement. Yep. GO COLOR! My motto? Life's too short for beige.
