Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

ART
1. The quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

That being said, I truly believe that that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And this mother's eye thinks this stuff is pretty cool.

The paintings in position....

This past week I've been painting our master bathroom. Our whole house needs paint---badly! When they built it they just sprayed the inside walls, and the paint is so thin that if you stick your nose right up to it you can see the difference between the primer and the actual paint. Spots do not wipe off very easy, and besides, it's white. While I can handle white in small doses, it's ummm, it's white. Anyway, so I'm pretty much going room by room, and painting this house this winter. I started with our master bathroom because I found a can of paint on craigslist for $10--original price was $36.95. Yay! Anyhoo, it was perfect for our master bathroom.

These pictures do not do justice to my paint job, or theirs. It's very hard to take correctly lighted pictures in a bathroom light sort of setting. So, I've been trying to figure out what to hang on the walls in that room. I originally started thinking I'd put up old style pin-up pictures from the 50's--Frank nixed that idea pretty quick. Hee hee. Then, I wanted paintings of red and orange flowers on black canvas. I couldn't find any, (That I could afford anyway!) So, I thought, phooey on that, I'll paint them myself. Ha! I actually snorted water up my nose when I typed that. See, I don't paint. I don't draw. I occasionally sketch out a sewing project. But, it never looks good. I can't even draw stick people properly. So, I was telling Auntie G my dilemna, and she said I should have Kiki and Debris do it. So, I did.
Here's the process.
We're calling this "The Condiment Collection". I stuck the paint on the plate for them, and Kiki immediately said, "Hey! It's Ketchup, Mustard and Pickles!!" Needless to say, the labels stuck. I do not believe the words red, yellow or green were spoken once during the painting proccess.

So, I painted the canvasses black. (canvasses? Looks weird. Canvai? Hee hee! Ah hah! Canvas plural... how's that for circumventing proper grammer?) 'Scuse me while I vomit nonsense.

Then I put daddy's old t-shirts on them, and let them go nuts.

These paintings are pretty cool. I can't wait to do this again. This was the first time they'd ever used paint brushes, and they did great. They actually do draw people, volcanoes, trains, parachutes, cyclops, umbrellas, you name it when they draw, but they were so excited by the whole paintbrush thing they just went nuts. It was cute. And, best of all, I have a reminder of my 4 and (almost) 3 year old every time I walk into my bathroom.

  3. Thanks! Their area was mess free because I was on them like white on rice pretty much the whole time. :-) But, they did really good on their own, I probably could have relaxed a bit. Our Craft Warehouse has awesome deals on canvasses. Those canvasses (size 8x10) were $2.99 a piece. The paint actually cost more than the canvasses... the whole project cost $36, but that includes brushes, and the paint tubes, which we will be able to use over and over again. I might have to buy additional paint for other projects, but I bought 4 colors at once, so that was the biggest expense.

  6. Great idea and awesome finished product!! The girls must be so proud to see them hanging as real artwork on the wall! Hopefully, after having those paintbrushes in their hands, they will want to continue their artistic ventures and those artistic genes will continue to come through:)

This post reminded me that I need to ask you for help with some extra credit for my Child Development class!! If you have a scanner on hand, do you think you could scan a few drawings from both Bri and Kiki...along with what they "titled" them and how old they were when they drew them? I can only submit 4 total so 2 from each would suffice, if you could spare a minute or two!:) It's for a good cause...you would be helping me earn 20 extra credit points and I may need it with trying to move into a new condo, while finishing two 3-credit classes-and working full-time!! AUGH!:)
