Before I start this post, just want to update my readers with the news that I started on Monday with teaching Kiki about homonyms. And, it was almost instant success. She loved it, and it's not like she's reading yet, but she grasped it so quickly, and it really made sense to her. Since then I've shown her all the homonyms we've been working on several times, and 100% of the time she's gotten what they mean correctly. Debris has also really gotten into it, so I think I might have found a great way to teach them something anyway! It's also been a great super simple addition and subtraction thing... didn't even plan on that when it started, but it worked out that way today when we learned about "SEW", "SOW" and "SO". (Example: We have three things that sound like SO--if we take away the one with the E in it, how many do we have? We have two W's--if we add one more, what types of SOW will we have, and how many of each?)
Anyway, so on to Debris. Basically if there is a project of any kind in the house, she will sit there and give her input all the way through. She asks very intelligent questions, and she wants to try out all the ingredients, test all the tools in use, experiment, you name it. I actually can't do anything in the kitchen without her coming in and joining me. She loves to bake and cook, and insists upon trying EVERY INGREDIENT before it goes into whatever is being made. A spice rack entertains her for hours. Baking Soda and Baking Powder are even interesting, EVERY TIME she tests them. She's the only child I know, who, instead of being horrified and furious at the age old Mean-mother-gives-child-baking-chocolate-without-telling-them trick, was delighted and intrigued. Who knew they made chocolate with no sugar in it? We should tell the world!! Here, let me try it again, and make sure it doesn't have any sugar in it! Daddy, check this out! Chocolate with no sugar in it!!! We should call Grammy and tell her!! Kiki, you gotta try this, it's amazing!
Anyhoo, she is highly mechanical, as you probably guessed from the title of this post. I was looking for a specific picture in our album the other day, and started noticing how many pictures I have of her using tools, it made me smile. So, here's my "Debris Using Tools" Vignette.
Very Important: The can opener only works if you hold your mouth the correct way.

Teaching Kiki how to use a peeler. When I use carrots for anything, I just count two as complete losses. They peel them to death.

I walked into the kitchen to this the other day. Every morning she must get her own juice, pour it into her own cup, put the lid on BY HERSELF, and put the straw in BY HERSELF. No help will be accepted. She apparently decided to go straight for the juice this time, and eliminated all those pesky middle steps.
The ONLY tomato we've gotten from our 8 tomato plants this year. The reason why we haven't gotten any others? Because they've been picked way too early. By a very excited Debris. Imagine it! Tomatoes grow on plants? Amazing!!!! She didn't get to this one before it turned red, so as soon as she spotted it she promptly picked it, and after we got done with the fit about her not being able to use the knife to cut it herself, she ate it, with great glee.
I don't think any words are necessary.
Daddy's CamelBak. Hours of entertainment, and a few more bathroom stops than should be necessary.
I love this one. I kid you not, she did an entire box of apples with this thing. And, she did them very well. She loved it.
Offering input on Daddy's project...
This picture is funny to me for two reasons. One, because it totally makes sense. Where else would you put worms?! Also, notice how the worm is in three pieces. Debris LOVES the fact that worms live, no matter how many pieces you break them into. She loves this fact so much, that she does it to her crayons. One day, when I was cleaning her piles of tiny little destroyed crayon pieces up, I said, "Brie, why do you break your crayons?" She answered me, "I'm making MORE crayons, Mommy!" I had no argument for that.

I'm sure I've got more Debris pictures, but this is what I could come up with in a few minutes time. Have a great day!
I adore that girl! She is such a nut. The tounge totally cracks me up! Auntie G
ReplyDeleteWhat a hoot!! I am laughing out loud again!! I loved that last comment about making more crayons - maked perfect sense! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your comments Auntie G and Jenn... I appreciate them! :-) Have a great evening!
ReplyDeleteI can remember the first time I found out about worms living when you cut them in half. It involved a trowel and my Grandma B. :) Good memories.
ReplyDeleteHey Chatty, that's actually where Debris gets her love of worms! Every time we visit my mom's house they all go out and dig worms. It's quite the event. We actually don't even have worms here in the clay desert non-soil that we have.
ReplyDeleteha! i actually found a huge night crawler in my yard a few days back, and wondered who would also appreciate such a fantastic find! Obviously, I should invite your kids over to dig in my yard. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha! Gina, when you visit you should bring a bag of worms for them. They would love you forever. :-)
